James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2010

"Good concentration of dark fruit, with a distinct leathery / savoury edge to the bouquet; the palate is quite firm and dry, with plenty of volume and a hint of bay leaf on the finish. Rating 92."

Jeremy Oliver, The Australian Wine Annual 2010/2011

"Complex, savoury and powerful, with dark, meaty and slightly herbal-edged fruit framed by a firm, powdery extract of drying tannin. Its dusty bouquet of blackberries, dark plums and slightly herbal whole bunch character reveals a hint of Bovril, while its earthy palate of dark red and black berry flavours overflies an assertive meaty, leathery presence. It’s long and savoury, with drive and balance. Rating 95."

Gilles Lapalus, Winemaker Sutton Grange Winery

Dark and intense colour with purple hue. Limpidity is medium.

Intense nose, dominantly fruit(blackberry), with a touch of reduction, showing some animal character. After aeration the nose evolves towards some spicy notes (cinnamon, fresh walnut), a touch of fresh mint developing, to camphor, and a spicy oak scents finishing with ripe tomatoes and olives. The aeration keeps bringing new fragrances.

Attack is intense, with a strong texture, soft and then the structure is revealing power and tannin. The aromas are in line with the spicy tones found on the nose, and the savoury character is well balanced by natural acidity and a touch of bitterness. The length is medium and the fine grain tannin are melting with the aromatics of fresh spice and fruit.

This wine is still in its primary youth, and the aeration shows the potential we can expect with a little bit more bottle ageing. Strong texture coming from a low yield vintage, very concentrated but with freshness and savoury character. This wine will be at ease with meat dishes, decanting at that stage, is recommended.
