2010 Sutton Grange Estate Rosé
Jeremy Oliver, The Australian WIne Annual 2012
Drop dead serious rose. Its dusty bouquet of raspberries, red cherries, cloves and cinnamon has a Viognier-like lift and perfume, with nutty, marzipan undertones. It’s long and restrained, with a smooth, gentle presence of red cherries and berries, nougat and spice underpinned by an almost fragile backbone. It finishes long and savoury, with soft acidity. Rating: 93.
Pale colour with a gold pink hue, very good limpidity and brilliance.
Very good intensity, the nose appears to be firstly spicy (cinnamon), fruity (peach), floral (rose) and fermentary (yeast). The nose spirals around these odours as it opens.
The texture of the wine is the first impression to arise, powerful and nervous. The well integrated acidity brings back the mouthfeel to a refreshing impression completed by the fruity aromatics (peach), vegetal and sweet spice (nutmeg). The wine is finishing with good length supported by the acidity.
The 2010 vintage was a very good year for white and rose at Sutton Grange. The blend is different to precedent vintages, due to the difference of maturity between viognier and syrah. Therefore sangiovese is taking the place of viognier in this blend. The fermentation went very slowly , and some barrels took 11 months to finish, giving the wine a rich texture, and maintaining the style of this wine. The resulting wine shows a bit more colour, a nose with Sutton Grange characteristics and a mouthfeel to match with some fine food.
